"We welcome the decision by the United States Government to remove the last barrier that would allow Dr Okonjo-Iweala to become the first woman and the first African woman to lead the organization."
"Nigeria and the entire African continent are pleased with this new step taken by the United States, which has opened a new chapter in our relationship with the United States under the Biden government," the statement added.
"Today, we view the United States as a supporter of Nigeria and Africa by trusting our respected citizen to lead the WTO."
The statement added that Nigeria was looking forward to working hand in hand with the new US administration on this issue and all other issues where the two countries share common interests.
The former Trump administration has previously rejected Okonjo-Iweala's nomination, despite being voted in by member states.
The former Trump administration is backing the South Korean woman.
But on Friday, the South Korean candidate withdrew from the race, giving Okonjo-Iweala a chance.
