The Kingdom of Kano has a long history

Historians who follow the current affairs have started to speak about the crisis of the kingdom of Kano state which refused to eat and refused to eat.

Following the words of the governor of the state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at the Labor Day celebration, he defended his government's position regarding the removal of King Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The BBC contacted Dr Shu'aib Shehu, a historian and director of the Northern Nigerian History Center in Sardauna House, that is, Arewa House, to hear his opinion on this matter.

He said that anything can happen, but the king is rarely removed and returned to the throne.

"It is not today that the king has been removed in the north of Nigeria, since the time the European colonialists came to remove kings and appoint those they want.

"Since then, no king has been brought back because of security issues.

"There are princes who were removed and sued and it was decided to bring them back, but they were not returned, because of the peace of the community, said Dr Shu'aib.

During a speech he made on International Workers' Day, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said the Kano emirs have come to stay.

Governor Ganduje's words are seen as a response to the words of the former governor of Kano state, Rabi'u Musa Kwankwanso.

In an interview, he was heard saying that perhaps the incoming government of Abba Gida-gida will look back on the matter of removing King Muhammed Sanusi II.

Kwankwaso said the issue of reviewing the structure of the Kano kingdom is in the hands of the new Kano governor who will assume office in May.

As for Governor Ganduje, he said, "We assure you that these kingdoms were created to provide unity, to progress.

"And I assure you that this kingdom is permanent, they have settled down, if God wills, there will be a strong link, and the link that will push God will not bring it," said Governor Ganduje.

Right now, the debate continues to heat up among the people of the Emirate of Kano.

On the ninth day of March 2020, the Kano state government announced the impeachment of the Emir of Kano at that time, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

In its statement, the Kano state government said that the reasons for impeaching him include disobedience and protecting the dignity of the Emirate of Kano and involving himself in political affairs and criticizing the government.

The debate raged on the future of Kano emirate and the new emirates that were created after the victory of the NNPP party in the 2023 state governorship election.

The NNPP is under the leadership of Senator Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, during whose reign Muhammadu Sanusi II was appointed as the Emir of Kano.

Although the current governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was with Kwankwaso when Muhammadu Sanusi II became the emir, but later the relationship between Ganduje and Kwankwaso became strained, something that heated up the politics of the state, which She is the second most popular voter in Nigeria.

In fact, it was Ganduje's government that deposed King Sanusi II, and it is seen that the rivalry between the two leading politicians can affect the future of the Kano emirate and the new emirates.
