The Nigerian Military Court has set Tuesday, October 10 as the date to sentence a senior officer, Major General Umaru M Mohamed, after being found guilty of corruption.
A special panel of seven judges led by Major General James Myam presided over the case, where they found Major General Mohammed, who is the chairman of the Nigerian Army Assets Company, guilty of 14 of the 18 charges against him. .
The crimes include money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, misappropriation of military assets and other crimes.
While reading the complaint, General Myam stated that “On charges one to six involving corruption and money from ship owners in the Marina in Lagos, Major General UM Mohammed was found guilty.
“He was then found guilty on the eighth charge which involved forging documents in the name of the directors of the Army Assets Company.
He was found guilty on the ninth charge of refusing to take action on treason," said General Myam as reported by the Voice of Nigeria Radio.
Also, the judicial team said that the general was found guilty on the 10th charge of forging documents.
Sale of assets
In the 12th indictment on the issue of selling the assets of the company he was leading, the trial team found General Mohammed guilty of selling the assets of the company for 200 million naira, after he ceased to be its chairman.
Then there is the 13th charge where he was found guilty of taking 74 million naira from the company's account on August 22, 2019.
On the other hand, the team acquitted General Mohammed from the 11th and 17th charges, the General is accused of withdrawing 750 million naira from the company's account, where the team said that the plaintiffs failed to provide convincing evidence on the allegations.
A team of seven judges, all of whom hold the rank of Major General, will sentence Major Mohammed next Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
